Founded more than 20 years ago, the concept started with a simple but powerful goal: to create a structured, engaging, and inclusive environment where kids of all backgrounds could thrive. What began in a garage with just 20 students has now evolved into a leading name in children’s martial arts, with multiple locations and a kids martial arts franchise model designed for expansion.

    At Wushu Central’s Kung Fu Kids, we believe that martial arts isn’t limited to self-defense; it’s a foundation for personal growth. Unlike many schools that focus solely on competition, our kids martial arts franchise curriculum is built to enhance confidence, discipline, and leadership skills.     Sifu (Master) David Chang & Elizabeth Chang

    Founders, Wushu Central’s Kung Fu Kids

    In 2002, David Chang, a national Wushu champion, embarked on a mission to bring the life-changing power of martial arts to children. What began with just 20 students training in his parents’ garage quickly grew into something much bigger. With his deep expertise, honed through years of training, including with the prestigious Beijing Wushu Team, David blended traditional martial arts with modern teaching methods to create a program that not only develops physical strength but also instills confidence, discipline, and resilience in every child. By 2003, Wushu Central had moved into its first official location in Santa Clara, and over the years, it continued expanding, opening a studio in San Jose in 2008, followed by locations in Palo Alto in 2021 and Pleasanton in 2023.

    Liz Chang (David’s wife) was the special piece needed that helped turn David’s dream into a thriving enterprise. With a background in restaurant management, she brought structure, efficiency, and a fresh perspective on inclusivity to the brand. Under her leadership, the academy transitioned from a competition-focused school to a welcoming environment where all children, regardless of athletic ability, could grow and thrive. She also played a key role in developing specialized programs like Spectrum Stars, designed for children on the autism spectrum, ensuring that every child had a place at Wushu Central’s Kung Fu Kids.

    Today, David and Liz are expanding their vision nationwide through franchising. Their mission is to provide aspiring entrepreneurs—including those without a martial arts background—with a reliable, scalable model for running a successful Kung Fu Kids location. By focusing on leadership, systems, and a powerful curriculum, they are making it possible for anyone who shares their passion for child development to bring the life-changing impact of martial arts to communities across the country.
